The Book of Mormon Challenge

submitted by Bishop Stuart Rogers

During a Teachers Quorum Presidency meeting on October 15th, the young men realized that they were struggling to follow the invitation from General Conference. They decided that their commitment to reading the Book of Mormon would increase if there were a challenge and a reward. Bishop Rogers issued the challenge to start that day and read the Book of Mormon through before the end of the year, which worked out to be a little under seven pages a day. If they completed it, then Bishop agreed to buy them dinner.

This challenge was extended to all of the youth and whichever group, young men or young women, who had the most people complete the challenge would then get to choose where they ate. By the end of the year, we had six youth complete the challenge; Olivia Dixon, David Johnson, Lawrence Johnson, Lucas Rogers, Phoebe Rogers and Daniel Yeates. Below are the five who attended the dinner.

The youth learned a number of lessons from completing the challenge:

  • It’s easier to remember what you’ve read if you’re not tired when reading
  • Taking even small notes can really help you stay focused on what you’re reading
  • It’s easy to find the time to read once you set your mind to it and make it a priority
  • Reading it through quickly helps you to remember how all the stories tie together
  • There was nothing important that had to be sacrificed to complete the challenge, so there was no reason not to continue.
